EXTINCTION: Fans are campaigning to save Sonic [SEGA]
A petition has been set up and signed by 2,000 fans of the blue hero as sales figures show his latest Wii and 3DS games have been lacklustre.
Fans are convinced a remake of Sonic 3 would rejuvenate the buzz around the 90s character and make him as huge as Nintendo's Mario again.
Madhu Sharma, who is running the letter writing campaign to Sega via website Sonic 3 Remastered, believes a re-made game for mobile devices by fan coders Taxman and Stealth will be a dead cert winner.
He said: "Taxman and Stealth put a great deal of loving care in their remakes of Sonic CD, 1 & 2.
"They even went as far as to restore lost deleted levels and add new modes. With Sonic 3 being widely considered as one of the best Sonic games, it's no wonder fans are desperate for it to be remade.
"This would also complete the Sonic trilogy.
